Mayor Daniel J. Stermer was sworn in as the City of Weston’s third Mayor, first in November 2012 and again in November 2016, based upon his qualifying for the office without opposition for both elections. Mayor Stermer previously served as a Commissioner for eight years, having been elected to office in September 2002 during a Special Election to fill the un-expired term of Commission Seat 3, was re-elected in March 2003, and was re-elected, without opposition, in November 2006 and was termed out of office in November 2010.
Mayor Stermer currently serves as the President of the Broward League of Cities, where he Chairs the Ethics Task Force and serves on the League’s Executive Committee. He was re-elected Chair of the Broward County Planning Council, was re-elected Chair of the Oversight Committee for the Implementation of the Interlocal Agreement for Public School Facility Planning, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Florida League of Cities.
Mayor Stermer had the privilege to serve on, and was elected Chair of the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization for four terms, rose to become the First Vice President of the Broward League of Cities, and served as Chairperson of the Broward League of Cities Sustainability Committee for three years all during his terms as a City Commissioner.
Professionally, Mayor Stermer is a Managing Director with Development Specialists, Inc., a management consulting and financial advisory services firm and a certified Florida Supreme Court Circuit Court mediator. Previously, Mayor Stermer was an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Florida, in the Economic Crimes Litigation Unit from 1996-2000, primarily focusing on investigating deceptive and unfair trade practices and racketeering, was an Assistant District Attorney in the Office of the District Attorney, Bronx County, and was a Special Assistant United States Attorney, Southern District of New York, specifically assigned to the Organized Crime Unit.
Mayor Stermer holds a Juris Doctor from Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center and a BA from the State University of New York at Binghamton.
Mayor Stermer and his family moved to Weston in 1996 from New York. Three children, Zachary (a Gator graduate), Jaclyn (a doctoral student at Nova Southeastern University after graduating of FSU) and Adam (a student at FSU) keep Commissioner Stermer very active. Mayor Stermer can be found just about every morning on the ARC Trainer at the YMCA in Weston and at the Weston Tennis Center.
