Florida is in the crosshairs of climate change. With a population crowded along the coastline of porous bedrock, combined with exposure to the occurrence of tropical storms and resulting shore erosion aggravated by sea level rise, Florida has more real estate and people at risk than any other region in the country.
Overall, global warming causing sea level rise is making the odds of permanent inundation reaching vulnerable areas, including Port Everglades and Broward Health Medical Center, on par with the odds of losing at Russian roulette. Add to that increased flood occurrences along our hundreds of miles of waterways, designated as shallow coastal flooding areas.
Since 1983, sea levels in South Florida have risen nearly a foot. It’s time now, not later, to tackle sea level rise in South Florida. Our panel examines some solutions.
